City guide

Turning a thin city website into something a visitor can actually use.

Surrey-BC.ca started as a dated local domain with limited depth. The rebuild treated it as an independent city guide rather than a collection of pages created mainly to hold links.

The challenge

A city guide needs enough information to help someone plan an outing, understand neighborhoods, find practical services and continue exploring. Thin pages and repetitive navigation do not give visitors a reason to stay or search engines a clear sense of topic quality.

How the project was approached

  • Expanded core destination pages with practical visitor information instead of short generic summaries.
  • Improved navigation so guides, things to do, itineraries and related local topics are easier to discover.
  • Reworked visual hierarchy and imagery placement to prevent text from disappearing on dark or image-heavy sections.
  • Created stronger internal relationships between local guides rather than repeating the same navigation block throughout the body.
  • Kept transportation references contextual to the travel topic instead of turning the guide into a promotional page.

Resulting direction

The property now has a clearer editorial purpose and can keep growing through useful local guides rather than through thin neighborhood pages. That makes it more credible as a standalone resource and more valuable to readers.

Project lesson

Support sites are strongest when they would still be worth visiting even if every outbound link were removed.
